When you're creating a blog post you want to have a targeted keyword you're trying to rank for. The tips below will give you the basics of keyword research. This will help you get 80% of the benefit with 20% of the effort and cost.

This is not meant to be an indepth SEO course that requires you to purchase expensive SEO software. Instead, I want to share with you the basic SEO tips that will allow you to create great posts that rank well.

What is a keyword? It's the search term someone types into Google when they're trying to find a solution to their problem. Long tail keywords are easier to rank for because there is less competition. "Fitness tips for moms" is easier to rank for than just "fitness tips."

Long Tail Keywords

Decide which long tail keywords you want to rank for in each post. Optimize the post to include those long tail keywords.
Example of a long tail keyword: ‘Postpartum Hair Loss’, instead of just the keywords ‘Hair Loss’.
Trying to rank for long tail keywords is easier than ranking for the higher level, less descriptive keywords.

Review #1 and #2 Google Search Results

Look over the first two results that come up for your long tail keyword.
If you want to outrank these posts, make sure that your post has more content and advice.
If the #1 Google search is 500 words, make sure your article is 1,000+ words.
If the #1 Google search has “5 ways to be a happy mom”, make sure your post has “50 ways to be a happy mom.”
Review the top results to scope out your competition. It is not to copy their ideas or content. It is to be used as a reference point so you know how much work to put in to outrank them.
Your goal is to be the ultimate guide for that specific phrase. So whenever someone Googles, “Postpartum hair loss”, your article will answer all of their questions about it.

Related Searches for Keywords

Google the root of your title, for example, "postpartum hair loss" or "how to be a happy mom", and see what comes up. Use the top questions displayed from Google to add to your post. Make sure to answer those questions in your post.

Lastly, scroll all the way to the bottom of the search results and look for the related searches.
Use those related searches naturally throughout your post.
